The PWM Mantis Hybrid-Analog Keyboard Synthesizer is a modern synthesizer that emerged from a partnership between PWM and the late Chris Hugget. Drawing inspiration from classic synthesizers such as the Wasp and OSCar, Mantis has been enhanced with contemporary refinements and performance capabilities. Chris Hugget, who had previously designed instruments for EDP and Novation, contributed his accumulated sounds and techniques to Mantis, which PWM then brought to the market as a tribute to his legacy after some final adjustments and the addition of powerful MIDI capabilities.
Mantis is a duophonic instrument with two independent voices, which begin with digital oscillators but are then processed through an entirely analogue signal path and a digital effects section. Its mathematically-generated oscillators run on a dedicated DSP chip to ensure optimal performance and quality. Each voice has two oscillators and a sub-oscillator, which can be blended together to create a diverse range of tones.
One of the key features of Mantis is its unique VCF design, developed by Hugget. The multi-mode filters in each voice are based on SSI2164 VCA chips and can be controlled simultaneously in series or parallel configurations, with a width control similar to that of the OSCar. This results in a distinct array of sonic possibilities, setting Mantis apart from other synthesizers.
Mantis also boasts impressive digital control capabilities, including MIDI CC control over all parameters. As a modern synthesizer, it pays tribute to the legacy of Chris Hugget's work while offering cutting-edge features for contemporary music production.
