With the EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas you get a Crushing Fuzz "Sustainar" pedal with a versatile array of saturation options, all wrapped up in a rugged, pedalboard-friendly enclosure.

Carve Out Your Own Singular, Mega-Heavy Tone!

This awesome pedal was designed to meet the needs of guitar sorceress Wata, from the experimental Japanese band Boris - a band renowned for their infusion of doom, hardcore, thrash, noise-core, ambient, free improv, drone, psychedelia, and much more besides.

If you're looking to up the ante in your compositions with killer riffs, searing/fluid/jaggedly melodic leads, or controlled walls of feedback, then the EQD Hizumitas coule be just the thing for you.

EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas Crushing Fuzz Sustainar Key Features

  • Faithful sonic recreation of Wata from Boris’ crushing go-to fuzz: the Elk BM Sustainar
  • Offers loads of heavy distortion and smooth sustain with an underlying grit
  • Excellent response to different pickup types and playing dynamics
  • Unique Tone and Sustain controls greatly impact the distortion’s character
  • Offers plenty of output Volume - unity is around 9-10 o’clock; everything above that is set to destroy
  • All-analog signal path
  • True bypass
  • Silent relay-based switching
  • Suitable for Guitar or Bass
  • Powered by regular 9 V DC PSU (centre -, 2,1 mm, ~10 mA current draw)

The Elk Reborn

To meet the demands of Wata, Earthquaker Devices didn't only take inspiration from her favourite Elk BM Sutainer, they faithfully recreated the exact model that she uses.

Wata sent her own pedal halfway across the world to Akron, Ohio, where those clever boffins at EQD HQ were able to reacreate each of the unique characteristics that helps contribute to crushing tones that she is renowned for.

Fuzz Sustainar

Like the aforementioned Elk BM, the Hizumitas delivers an impressive amount of heavy distortion and smooth sustain, with the kind of underlying grit reminiscent of a speaker on the verge of being ripped apart, combined with an unexpected level of clarity.

In addition to this, the Sustain control covers a wide range of saturation, which means that even small changes will have a huge effect on your overall tone, whilst responding excellently to all types of pickups and playing dynamics.

This means that when you hit a power chord it will sound huge and heavy, whilst open chords will be dynamic and feature incredible note separataion, and single note leads come accross as both smooth and powerful, especially when you use a neck pickup.

Tone Control

Unlike with other fuzz/distortion pedals, the Tone Control on the Hizumitas can have a drastic effect on the character of the saturation in conjunction with the tone.

This control pot can take you from an aggressive mid-range through to piercing highs when turned counter clockwise, whilst turning it clockwise will tame the highs and bring in a thunderous low end.

In addition to this, the Volume control offers an impressive output gain, with unity at around the 9-10 o'clock point, whilst anything beyond will unleash the full power of Hizumitas.
