Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch 13" x 6" snare drum in Red Oyster

because of the snare drum's range, you find at least one or two in nearly every studio. Most sporting them in backline for touring kits, 13" x 6" is becoming a popular size in snare drums at the momment given its versatility and ear destroying crack, i dont think we need to mention the finish you can see for yourself its stunning. So most are put off by the size, but, people, its only an inch and brings a whole new ball game when it comes to tone and attack, everything is sharper and has more attack, especially live. You may think that tuning range would be minimal but weve found that with these diamentions tuning ranges are more focused and easier to get to with low, medium and high tunings in mind. Low tuning, this drum is rather naughty giving you all the beefy chest of a silver back gorilla, medium tuning you are now firing a precision rifle and rimshots break through any sound barrier trying to out flank it, ghost notes are super sensitive and feel/response is everything youd want from a snare. When cranked up to the higher register, there is so much crack, the DEA will be knocking on the door looking for Hiesenburg from Breaking Bad. all joking a side this snare is what we view as a staple for any drummer taking their gear seriously, not to say a beginner shouldnt get involved, if you have the oppurtunity you should jump at the chance to get this. so lets jump into the gorgeous details.

  • Bearing Edge: The shape of the edge is one of the most important factors which affect the drum sound and Tama have worked extensively on achieving the most functional shape for drum head seating onto the edge, the angle on the outer edge of the drum is rounded, like you could say half baseball bat style like older/vintage drums, doing this not only creates better seating for the drum head but helps with a more positive contact between the shell and head for a fuller tone from the drum, the inside edge is then angled at 45-degrees to focus more on the attack and to enchance the low register of the shell. This bearing edge shape is part of the tradition at Tama and is crucial in providing Tama's unique drum sound.
  • Shells: 4-ply Birch on the outside with 2 inner plys of American Black Walnut, this is so considered a hybrid shell with birch focusing on the attack and walnut bring home the warmth we all seek for. These two beautiful woods in this combination not only bring a lot of punch but they secrete warmth and body with easily controlled mellow over tones.
  • Die-Cast Hoops: formed using molten zinc poured into a cast, Tama's die-cast hoops are of supreme quality adding weight to the drum and helping towards your tuning staying put, these hoops deliver incredible sharp, solid rim shots and very open woody cross stick. You see die-cast hoops on most drums now and for good reason, they stand up to a life time of abuse and shake off most if not all rudiments you throw at them, they aid to the projection as musch as you think they potentially dampen a drum they actually focus the sound and project it further so to be more focused and true.
