Tama are certainly hinting that smaller, more shallow toms could well be the next big thing within the drum world, and by looking at some of the features inside the new Tama Superstar Custom Hyperdrive Kit, we may well be inclined to agree with them! When initially launched in 2005, Tama's Superstar series positioned itself in the middle band of the three main product ranges. Six variations can be found throughout the Superstar series, offering a wealth of nishes and sizes. Three of these options come in the form of the new Hyperdrive range, offering shallow toms, with the top of the range represented by the Custom Hyperdrive Superstar, boasting an extremely stylish lacquered fade nish.
A perfect blend of birch and basswood (used as its internal ply and outer lacquered veneer) make the Superstar shells offer an organic and responsive tone. The Toms and snares are manufactured from 6mm six-ply, while the bass drum comes in 7mm seven-ply. Showcasing razor sharp bearing edges, you can expect a quality, hard-wearing wood. 'Hyperdrive' is the label given to the Tama shallow Tom style
A cool black nickel has been chosen for all of the hardware and the 'Sound Bridge' lugs are full length and bridged, reducing the stress put onto the drum and allowing for higher tensions without constricting the shell.
