Introducing the SPL Phonos RIAA Phono Preamplifier, seen here in Black, a flawless creation specifically designed for vinyl enthusiasts, catering to both moving magnet and moving coil cartridge technologies.
Phonos is engineered to provide optimal performance and safety during playback by offering comprehensive support for both magnet and coil turntable cartridges.
Moving magnet cartridges deliver a desirable, rich, and warm sound. However, the cable capacitance often interferes with the frequency response and phase linearity. Phonos addresses this issue by providing four individual capacitance settings that can be switched to precisely flatten the frequency response or enhance high frequencies during playback.
Moving coil cartridges, on the other hand, sometimes suffer from low signal output, making them more susceptible to excessive noise or hum. To overcome this challenge, Phonos offers a 20dB higher preamp for the moving coil stage, along with six switchable impedance values to accurately calculate the flattest possible frequency response.
Furthermore, Phonos incorporates a built-in subsonic filter to effectively eliminate turntable rumble caused by the mechanical drive of the turntable, which is further amplified by the preamp's low-frequency gain.
Phonos from SPL also implements an equalization curve that precisely matches the original Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filter designed by Douglas Self. RIAA EQing has been the global standard for recording and playback of phonograph records since the mid-1950s.
Similar to the rest of SPL's Professional Fidelity range, Phonos is powered by their proprietary 120V rail technology. This groundbreaking innovation provides unparalleled headroom and operates at a voltage of 120V (with a 60V DC margin), resulting in an expansive dynamic range exceeding 140dB.
