In its second generation, the GoldMike Mk2 is a dual-channel microphone and instrument preamplifier that skillfully combines the characteristics of both tube and transistor technologies, offering a vast range of tone and character options.
The GoldMike Mk2 leverages the efficiency of low-noise discrete transistor amplification while embracing the musical coloration and warmth provided by a dedicated tube stage. This unique combination allows the preamp to cover a wide tonal spectrum within a single unit.
To maintain the highest standards of quality, SPL has chosen to steer clear of integrated circuits in the GoldMike's transistor stage, opting instead for a Class A design featuring a single transistor and fully discrete circuitry. This approach ensures exceptional dynamic range and clarity that surpasses expectations for a preamp in this price range.
The tube stage of the GoldMike offers three selectable amplification levels: +6 dB, +12 dB, and +18 dB. This versatility enables users to achieve various saturation levels and limiting effects to suit their desired sound.
Incorporating another innovative SPL technology, the GoldMike Mk2 features Flair. Harnessing the harmonical behavior of the preamp's internal coils, the Flair control acts as a presence filter, allowing users to adjust the prominence of the recording element within any mix.
Additionally, SPL has integrated a pre-output stage Peak/FET limiter into the GoldMike Mk2, providing extra compression capabilities. This feature can enhance the punchiness of a source or serve as a protective measure against clipping before the signal reaches the AD conversion stage.
