Recreation of a Classic
First introduced in the 1950s as the Buddy Rich Model Snare, the Ludwig Jazz Fest took on its first form in the 1960s.
It quickly became Ludwig's most popular wood shell snare drum of all time thanks in part to its use by legendary Beatles drummer Ringo Starr.
Released at NAMM 2019 and reimagined for the modern day, this updated Jazz Fest snare retains many of the attributes found on the original model.

History Lesson
To understand the immense status of this snare drum you need to look into its past success.
Though first released in the 1950s it wasn't until it was renamed as the Jazz Festival snare in the 60s that this snare really took flight.
Quickly becoming one of the most prominent snares in the history of Ludwig's line up, the Jazz Festival snare drum went on to become the best-selling Ludwig wood snare drum of all time.
The success of this snare was due in large part to its appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 when Ringo Starr used it with The Beatles.
Since then it's become the go-to recording choice of many drummers for its rich warm tone and vibrant resonance.
3 Ply Shell
Maintaining the 5.5 inch depth first introduced in the 1960s, this Ludwig Jazz Fest snare features a 3-ply legacy mahogany shell.
Utilising the same 3 ply mahogany / poplar blend found on the 1960s snare, this new 2019 Jazz Fest features a central 1/8 inch ply of poplar sandwiched between two 1/16 inch mahogany plies.
Characterised by its muted highs, smooth mids and warm rich lows, mahogany delivers a vibrant and resonant tone.
In addition, poplar offers soft highs and mids with a boosted warm low end for a smooth and even response.
The combination of the two therefore serves to deliver a snare sound with a beautifully warm low-end response to deliver a fat back beat.
Vintage Vibes
Continuing the vintage style of this snare drum, the 14 inch x 5.5 inch Jazz Fest features the same 8 lug configuration as the original incarnation.
The 8 twin lugs are joined by a vintage '64 snare bed, 3 step baseball bat tone control and white inchœreso coat inch interior in keeping with the vintage vibe.
The vintage snare bed is accurately centered and graduated to ensure the snare wires lie correctly to achieve the appropriate level of contact between the wires and the resonant head to gain a sensitive playing response.
As with the original snares, this updated Ludwig Jazz Fest features a 3-step baseball bat tone control which allows you to select the level of dampening you require.
Fitted to the inside of the snare, this tone control offers three levels of adjustment to vary the contact of the dampener with the underside of the batter head.
Pressing the dampener fully against the head achieves the maximum amount of suppression, while the reduced contact allows a more open tone.
The interior of the snare shell also features a white inchœreso coat inch interior in keeping with the specifications of the 1960s original snare.
