A few years ago, EarthQuaker Devices had two awesomely potent, yet different, fuzz pedals in their arsenal: the company's flagship Hoof and the Tone Reaper.
As both were quite different sounding and useful in their own right, some genius had a thought of "... I wonder what would happen if I stuck them both together as a single unit..." and voila, the Hoofreaper was born! Oh, and then they stuck an Octave option in the mix (which became so popular that it was later released as a standalone effect, the Tentacle), just in case.
As if that wasn't enough, they've now released the new-look Hoof Reaper V2 - an absolute Sonic Doomsday Hammer of a fuzz unit!
Two of the Best Fuzz Circuits Around - In One Pedal!
As versatile a fuzz pedal as you could wish for, the Hoof Reaper V2 is capable of sounds ranging from subtle octave-up overtones through to crushing octave squalls that sound like exploding amp stacks. You can use each effect individually, or in series, with the order of the effects preset for optimum performance!
The Hoof
What can be said about Earthquaker's flagship fuzz pedal that hasn't already been vocalised elsewhere? Not a lot to be honest. This no-fuss, easy to use fuzz-box can produce sounds that range from warm, gritty overdrive, up into a huge sustaining fuzz. The circuit uses a germanium/silicon hybrid Muff-style construction with increased volume and sustain. It also features a shift control that can be used to alter the frequency response of the tone control, and gives you a much tighter, cleaner sound than a typical Muff pedal.
The Tone Reaper
This vintage fuzz unit is based on the "3 knob" bender. You can achieve a wide range of tones from every bender era with this silicon/germanium hybrid through careful manipulation of the tone and fuzz controls, with everything from thin and spitty to thick growling sustain at your fingertips.
The Tentacle
As stated earlier, the octave circuit from the original 2010 Hoof Reaper was so popular that Earthquaker went on to release it as a standalone pedal: The Tentacle. This octave effect works perfectly with both fuzz circuits, and lets you unleash everything from classic Hendrix-esque tones to all-out screaming.
New Features
For the Hoof Reaper V2, Earthquaker Devices have installed the all-new flexi-switch. This allows you to use the effects in eith the traditional latching mode (on/off switching) or in the brand new momentary mode, letting you jump in and out of octaved riffs and solos at your own discretion. As if that wasn't enough, as it's a fully analog octave effect that's built in, it's much more pronounced when using your neck pickup and playing above the 12th fret!
