The Sonor Vintage Series drums represent the return of the ‘old Sonor sound’ and bring back an iconic look and sound of the time between the 1950s and early 1970s.
The Sonor team, in cooperation with artists and collectors, worked tirelessly to bring the Vintage Series drums as close as possible to the look, feel, and sound of its predecessor, the Teardrop drums. Sonor combined its knowledge of modern drum building with the look and sound of vintage drums to create an instrument that will hold up to today’s modern playing.
Like the original Teardrop drums, the Vintage series drums feature hand-selected premium German Beech shells with rounded bearing edges. Sonor has carefully recreated the look of the 1950s teardrop lug and updated it with Sonor’s exclusive Tunesafe tuning system. Not overlooking any details, Sonor has redesigned the Superprofil triple-flanged hoops and brought back the timeless SONOR logo and badge used between 1952 and 1961.

SONOR Vintage Series Sound
The rounded bearing edge creates more head contact, which generates a beefier and a little shorter sound in comparison to the 45-degree cut shells. The result is a warm, dry yet resonant sound that you'll notice on older drum records.VINTAGE snare drums feature a new throw-off. The 'Super 50', a completely redesigned strainer, was inspired by the throw-off which was used on the SONOR D-411 and D-412 snares in the 1950s.
Teardrop Lugs
Updated teardrop lug featuring the authentic look of the 50s with Tunesafe-System. Sonor dedicated special attention to the re-design of the Vintage lug. Maintaining the original shape we integrated the TuneSafe system for maximum de-tuning prevention. (An update even the vintage purists will appreciate)
Cross Lamination Tension Free
Drum shells need to act as solid acoustic unities as the foundation for a great drum sound. Cross-laminated plies of birch are used to form a perfectly round shell with great stability. Each ply is laminated at a 90° angle to allow for a shell that is tension-free. Sonor's tension-free shells would keep their round shape even if they were cut in half from the batter to the resonant side. Vintage Series shells are made with 9 plies of select German beech for a 6mm total thickness. The rounded bearing edges deliver a warm tone with a deep low end and great resonance.
Optimum Shell Measurement
The OSM shell construction utilizes slightly undersized shell diameters to give the drum head the space to float freely, allowing unrestricted contact between the bearing edge and the drum head giving you a fuller, rounded tone with easier-to-reach lows and penetrating highs
