After being founded in 1986, Sandberg quickly made a name for themselves in crafted high-grade, custom bass guitars. Despite branching out into high quality 6-string guitars too during subsequent 30+ years, it's with their basses that they really stand out above the crowd. The California TT4 is just one example of excellent, hand-made craftsmanship that they have to offer, but it's certainly one of my personal favourites.
Familiar, but different...
Visually the California TT series is instantly familiar to most bass players, bearing a striking resemblance to one of the most popular bass guitars in history - the Jazz Bass. However, the closer you look at them the more obvious the differences are, whether it's something superficial (such as the design of the Sandberg bridge), something in the circuitry (the onboard active / passive Preamp) or something in the sound generated by those wide pole-piece pickups.
T-Style Pickups
These cunningly crafted T-Style pickups from Delano are more than meets the eye. Firstly there's the visual impact of the 9.5mm pole pieces, instantly marking them out as different from the usual Single Coil pickups that they initially resemble. The difference in sound provided by these pole pieces is very clearly audible: you get a seriously fast transient attack, hefty low-end response, crystal clear midrange and brilliant high end for an awesome sonic array. Even with heavily drop-tuned settings to your strings, the sound remains tight, focused and alive.
Sandberg 2-band Preamp
The preamp circuitry on the California TT4 is just as crafty as the pickups. What initially looks like a standard J-Bass style setup has a clever little surprise in store, in the shape of a push/pull Volume control knob that allows you to set the preamp to Active or Passive.
Next to the Volume control you have the Balance control, which acts as a nice pickup selector "Blend" option, where you can determine the level of each pickup in the mix (centre position has both pickups running at 100%, or turn the control in the direction of the pickup you want to be at the forefront to make it so).
The Treble control allows you to either boost the Treble or cut the tone, which works even in passive mode! And finally there's the Bass control, which works in the same way as the Treble control but for your low-end frequencies. Exciting stuff!
Made to be Played
With the ergonomic and solidly constructed chassis, this guitar is most certainly one that you could grace a stage with. The curvature of this relatively lightweight body rests comfortably against you as you play, making even the longest of shows and studio sessions pass by that bit quicker.
Add that to the perfect sounding tonal spectrum supplied by the solid wood body and awesome electronics system, and you will fast be running out of reasons NOT to buy it.
Working for one of the largest musical instrument retailers in Europe means that I'm lucky enough to play-test many musical instruments, and as such it takes something truly spectacular for one to stand out above the others in my memory.
Throughout this time I've tested several Sandberg basses, including a California TT4, and every one of those Sandbergs stands out for me above pretty much everything else I have played.
They're certainly priced for serious and professional musicians, but here at PMT we have a range of attractive Home Delivery options available on them too, making them much more accessible for people like me and you.
