Martin 00-18, Authentic 1931 Acoustic Guitar
It's no secret that the C.F. Martin & Co guitar company has been consistently creating some of the greatest (if not, THE greatest) acoustic guitars in the world for over 180 years. This consistency is due, in part, to their continual innovation of new techniques which subsequently become industry standards in acoustic guitar creation. All Martin guitars are lovingly hand-crafted by a host of skilled craftsmen and woman, who utilise a combination of all new designs and techniques in conjunction with those first introduced by the company founder.
Whilst Martin fully embrace new technologies and crafting techniques, they never forget their roots and will occasionally revisit some of their very earliest successes, releasing them as highly exclusive, premium quality works of art, which is exactly what they've done here with the 00-18 Authentic 1931 Parlor Acoustic Guitar.
As faithful a reproduction as you could wish for
With this guitar, Martin have gone all out to reproduce one of their early 20th century flagship models, with everything from the tonewoods used, the sound chamber bracing, and even the type of glue being accurate to the original 1931 models, this is about as close to playing the same kind of instrument as the Delta Bluesmen of the Great Depression as you can get. The well-balanced tone and convenient size of the 00-18 Authentic 1931 appeals to a broad range of players and musical styles.
Whilst it's now nigh-on impossible to use some of the same woods as was utilised in guitar construction during the 1930's, Martin have managed to faithfully recreate the characteristics of these woods with their Vintage Tone System. The top of the 00-18 Authentic 1931 is made from Adirondack Spruce, which has nice and bright tonal qualities (similar to the more common Sitka Spruce) but gives you a highly dynamic sound option, allowing you to play hard and loud without losing any clarity at all. The back and sides are made from genuine Mahogany, adding a warm timbre with lots of bottom end, working perfectly in conjunction with the bright and springy Adirondack top.
Vintage Tone System
Martin's Vintage Tone System (or VTS for short) makes use of a unique recipe based on the historic torrefaction system. Essentially the VTS works like a time machine, in which the company can ascertain the kind of tops/braces that were used in a certain era, allowing their craftsmen to faithfully recreate the instruments of the day, not only visually but also (more importantly) aurally - giving you the chance to play with the kind of vintage tone normally reserved for incredibly rare and old guitars.
To make the vintage feel complete, Martin have finished the guitar using only historically accurate features. Everything from the old style Multi-Stripe rosette, faux turtle pickguard, Golden Age Relic machine heads and genuine ebony fretboard / bridge help you to travel back in time and experience the authentic feel and sounds of what was one of the most popular instruments of the day.
The price of this exclusively limited guitar is certainly not for the faint of hear, however with an instrument of this quality you should consider it more of an investment in a piece of guitar-making history.
