The legendary Ludwig Jazz Festival snare was first introduced in the 1950s as the Buddy Rich Model Snare.
It wasn't until the 1960s when the name was changed that the Jazz Festival took on its first form.
The snare quickly became Ludwig's most popular wood snare drum of all time, thanks in part to its use by Ringo Starr.
Fast forward to NAMM 2019 where Ludwig unveiled their modern-day reimagining of the classic snare, which features many of the attributes found on the original model.

Utilising the same 3 ply mahogany / poplar blend found on the 1960s snares, this new 2019 Jazz Fest features a middle 1/8 inch ply of poplar with an inner and outer 1/16 inch ply of mahogany.
Known for it's muted highs, smooth mids and warm rich lows, mahogany delivers a beautifully vibrant and resonant snare sound.
Additionally, poplar provides a blend of soft highs and mids with a boosted warm bottom end for a sound that's smooth and even.
The combination of the two serves to provide a snare drum with a lusciously warm low-end response that delivers a fat back beat.
Vintage Features
This modern Jazz Fest snare features many of the same attributes as the original 1960s incarnation.
Featuring an 8-lug configuration, this snare also has a vintage '64 snare bed, 3 step baseball bat tone control and white inchœreso coat inch interior to deliver a vintage vibe throughout.
The vintage '64 snare bed is accurately centred and graduated to make sure the snare wires achieve the optimum level of contact with the snare side head for increased sensitivity.
The 3-step baseball bat tone control provides easy adjustment and selection of the level of dampening to ensure you always achieve the exact tone you require.
Offering 3 setting levels, the tone control allows you to vary the contact of the internal dampener with the underside of the batter head.
The more contact between the dampener and the snare head the more suppression of the tone, while reduced contact enables a more open snare sound.
The interior of the Jazz Fest snare also features a white inchœreso coat inch in keeping with the specifications of the 1960s original.
