Ever since a certain company based in New Jersey decided to make use of a synthesizer's envelope-controlled filter to develop the world's first Envelope Filter effects pedal in 1972 (the awesome Mutron III), the effect has made frequent forays into the world of popular music, most predominantly in the Disco, Funk and Jazz genres.
The effect itself is incredibly similar to that produced by a Wah pedal, although instead of an expression pedal Envelope Filters would alter in response to the volume of the input signal, making it as alternately expressive as you could wish it to be (although in more recent years, you can often buy an envelope filter with an Expression Pedal jack socket, allowing you to control it that way instead).
A warm, subtle and effective Envelope Filter effects pedal
The main issue with Envelope Filter pedals is that they can often be very expensive, especially for an effect that you may only use on one or two songs during your band's entire set. Now, thanks to CKK Electronic, you can own the excellent Q Cat: a smooth sounding, easy-to-use envelope filter that is not only budget friendly, but can be the aural equivalent of popping bubble wrap (when set up correctly).
The controls are fairly straight-forward, and relatively easy to master. First there's Frequence, which controls just how sharp or smooth the filter effect is. Then there's Resonance, which controls just how intense the blend is between the effect and your "dry" signal. There's also the Recovery switch, where you choose how quickly the filter opens and closes. Finally, there's the Sensitivity control, which (you guessed it) controls just how sensitive the filter is - tuned up high then even the slightest of notes will trigger the effect, set to low and the effect will be much more subtle.
And that's it. The Q-Cat is fun to play around with, whether you want the most subtle of envelope effects or an all-out funk-attack, and not only will you not need to take out a mortgage to buy one, but it would look incredible on any pedal board, especially with that funky little cat artwork.
