Ground Up Microphone Research, Design and Development

Not content to simply put their own take on an existing concept, when it came to designing the Aston Starlight, Aston Microphones literally started from scratch, analysing every aspect of microphone creation.

On the journey to creating the perfect microphone, Aston Microphones conducted double blind listening tests with a panel of over 50 top producers who ended up hand-picking the 20mm cardioid capsule used in the Aston Starlight pencil microphone.

Aston Starlight – Made in Britain

One unique feature you will notice straight away is the addition of a Class 2 laser to the Aston Starlight SDC.

Using the laser, you can easily recall microphone positions in the studio so your set up can easily be replicated later on.

Also, you’ll find you have a great amount of accuracy thanks to the laser and microphone positions can be marked on drums etc., allowing you to save an incredible amount of time – perfect for setting up at gigs.

The head on the Aston Starlight was made using a careful sintering process which uses thousands of ball bearings. Meticulous testing of the sintered head’s thickness as well as the average size of the sinter spheres combined with nickel plating and controlled to only a few nanometres thickness, near perfect acoustic porosity has been achieved.

Using a 1.5mm solid stainless steel chassis that has been tumbled for up to 4 hours to achieve its fantastic finish, the Aston Starlight is rugged and nigh on indestructible.

Incredible Circuitry with 3 Modes

Aston’s Starlight microphone utilises three different circuit paths, effectively making it three microphones in one! For the perfect tone response, you can choose between Vintage, Modern and Hybrid settings so you’re set to record anything from guitar cabs, drums, vocals or strings.

Whatever the application, you will find the Aston Starlight delivers incredible performance above and beyond what you expect from microphones at this microphone’s modest price.

A fine-tuned and discrete mic amp circuit combined with high-spec components ensures an extremely sensitive yet low noise design that gives you huge amounts of headroom.

This means that the Aston Starlight microphone can handle anything from extremely quiet to very loud sound sources, all without compromising performance.

Also, thanks to the Starlight’s high output level, your microphone preamps can operate with lower gain for optimal distortion performance.

Altering the response of the capsule without adding any unwanted noise to the circuit, the Starlight’s voicing control utilises inductive active filters at the front-end of the microphone, meaning that voice switching is practically the equivalent of changing the capsule, giving you completely different tonal characteristics.

You’ll also be pleased to hear that these aren’t just two Aston Starlight microphones taken from the production line; this stereo pair has been matched by hand to ensure perfect parity.
