The history behind Johnny Cash's Martin D-35 is rather brilliant - C.F Martin originally insisted on no Black guitars to ever be produced from their factory, but this model was requested and built without his knowledge, and didn't find out until he saw it played live on "Columbo".
The ebony fingerboard is fitted with abalone stars bordered in mother-of-pearl position markers, and Johnny's signature is inlaid in pearl between the 19th and 20th frets. The interior label is signed by Johnny Cash's son, John Carter Cash, and C.F. Martin IV.
