Today the Gibson Custom Shop creates exacting duplicates of the ES-335 as it first left the Kalamazoo plant in 1958. That year just 267 were built, but the original vintage Gibson 335 grew steadily in popularity, peaking in 1967 thanks largely to Eric Clapton’s high-profile use of a cherry Gibson ES335 in the band Cream.
The Gibson ES335 Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar in Cherry boasts a brave, historically unmatched design.
The Gibson ES-335 electric guitar is ideal for jazz and musicians, but still packs enough punch to really impress in live environments. From Chuck Berry’s numerous performances to Alvin Lee’s incendiary performance at Woodstock to Police’s 2008 tour in NYC, the ES-335 has been the instrument of choice for any players seeking gorgeous, round, mellow tones, tempered with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody electric like the Les Paul.
The ES-335 Custom has been meticulously designed to offer uncomprimising volume, even from its semi-hollow body. A solid Maple centre block runs through the length of the body, which maximises tone and helps reduce feedback. Either side, hollow 'wings' allow the strings to resonate freely and offers a uniquely satisfying sustain which most solidbodied guitars can't offer. This makes it perfectly suited to capture the iconic jazz and blues rock sound of the 60's, but is equally well suited for harder rock and rhythmic styles too. The neck is built from one piece of mahogany and is topped off with a bound Rosewood fretboard containing 22 frets and pearloid dot inlays. Vintage tone is delivered via a pair of '57 humbuckers, with 3-way selector switch, volume and tone pots which help you craft your tone as you see fit.
The combination of a nickel ABR-1 bridge and stopbar tailpiece coupled with classic Nickel Grover kidney-button tuners helps keep tuning stability rock solid, and comes in a hardshell case as standard.
