It's that time of the year again - when Gibson reveals their new line-up of guitars, and guitarists worldwide get excited. Well, taking a look at the Gibson 2017 guitars, it's easy to see why!
Gibson, more than any other brand, is a victim of their own success - it's hard to be innovative when your most popular guitar was made in 1959! And yet - every year, when Gibson announces a new line-up of guitars, it's hard not to get excited. You can never tell how much Gibson will innovate, or how much they'll keep traditional. Les Paul himself knew how hard it was to please other guitarists - or himself, for that matter, and that's why he kept adding new features to his most famous design.
But, looking at the newly announced range of Gibson 2017 models, it's easy to see it'll be a vintage year for the brand: every guitar looks stunning, with enough new features to please players who prefer to look forward, and enough traditional features to please those who think Gibson got it right already, all those years ago.
What's New in the Gibson 2017 Guitars?
There are quite a few innovations on the 2017 guitars - subtle enough not to affect your familiarity with the instrument, but which, together, are significant enough to make sure the 2017 range feels fresh and modern. Check some of them out:
- New Ultra-Modern weight relief allows for comfortable play and greater sonic depth, slightly heavier than 2016 (Les Paul Standard)
- Push-pull switching on all four knobs for coil-tapping on both pickups, a pure bypass, and phase reverse
- No more "Rhythm / Treble" plastic ring around the 3-way toggle switch
- Thicker rosewood fingerboards
- Unprecedented switching options: 2 volumes, 2 tones, 1 toggle with push-pull and DIP switch giving you more than 150 wiring combinations (LP Studio HP)
- Less finishes per model; some different finishes than 2016
- Free strap & polishing cloth on most models
- New S-Series is a lower-priced range perfect for first-time Gibson guitar buyers!
Will There Be Gibson 2017 Left-Handed Models?
Yes! Left-handed models will be available to order, from December 2016. However, numbers are usually limited, and models will only be available in 2017.
2017 Hottest Colour Finishes
For many of us, a Les Paul will always look its best in a 'burst finish, or gold top, or ebony. But many players will love those more modern, gorgeous finishes found on many 2017 models. Some of our favourite include the Bourbon Burst and Blueberry Burst of the Standard models; the Ocean Green Burst of the Les Paul Classic; the Black Cherry Burst of the Les Paul Studio; and the cool Worn Brown of the affordable Les Paul Faded. Check them out:

Les Paul Traditional 2017 T
A trip back in time to the Les Paul's golden era. But this Les Paul inspired by the legendary late '50s Les Pauls has all the benefits of modern-era Gibsons. From a distance with its Traditional features and accurate Grade-AA maple top on a solid mahogany body, this Les Paul could be mistaken for a guitar kept under the bed since 1959.

Beautiful yet simple, the Les Paul Studio offers everything you demand from a Les Paul and then some. SG Standard 2017 T
Raising the Standard. Few Gibson guitars are as classic as the heritage cherry SG, and, lo and behold, in 2017 Gibson simply HAD to feature this finish again, of course! Though pretty much the same as always, it has slight differences when compared to the 2016 model, such as a return to the smaller pickupguard, and 57 Classic Humbuckers. The SG Standard 2017 T is delivered in a classic Gibson hardshell case with a Gibson multi-tool, a premium leather strap, and a polishing cloth. HP version available.
SG Special 2017 T
Vintage looks with tremendous tones. The SG Special 2017 T offers tremendous value-for-money, especially when you consider how similar it is to the Standard, with the main differences simply the satin finish, pickups (490R/490T humbuckers) and neck without binding. We wouldn't be surprised if many players prefer this one - for vintage vibes alone, it's amazing! Delivered in a padded gigbag with a strap and polishing cloth. HP version available.
SG Faded 2017 T
Another very affordable SG option, basically the same of the SG Special, with minor cosmetic differences, such as the pickup guard and uncovered humbuckers, besides the worn look. The SG Faded 2017 T has been carefully crafted by Gibson USA to look and feel like an old friend the first time you pick it up. The SG Faded is an artful blend of history and modernity, where SG traditions began more than five decades ago meet with 21st century innovations for sonic versatility and playability. A set of 490R and 490T humbuckers with Alnico magnets delivers historic SG tones, while a slim-taper neck with a thicker rosewood fingerboard and 22 polished frets combine for an amazing feel in the hand, yielding easy bends and lightning-fast soloing, an impressive value for a high quality made-in-USA Gibson guitar. Firebird 2017 T
