Here's our guide to all the best recording studios and rehearsal spaces in Birmingham - which make sure the city will continue to be a fertile ground for making great music!
Birmingham has a rich and diverse musical tradition: from Spencer Davis Group in the Sixties, to Black Sabbath in the 70's, Duran Duran in the 80's and current bands such as indie darlings Peace, Birmingham has always been an important city for British music.
Musicians living in the area should already be familiar with our PMT Birmingham store, the leading music store in the region, with the largest guitar wall in Europe. But we know that getting the right gear is only half the journey - you need to get down to actually making some music!
Thankfully, as befitting a city of such musical importance, Birmingham is not short of great spaces where to rehearse and record your music, and here's our pick of the best:
Shredder Live Lounge
This is a brand new recording studio and rehearsal space, offering high-end recording, mixing and mastering from £20 per track, as well as having one of the UK's most unique and advanced rehearsal studios: their rehearsal space includes drum riser and lightning rig, to replicate the atmosphere of a real gig!
So Called Studios
Based in Acock's Green, they have five rehearsal rooms available for hire, as well as a high-quality professional recording studio fully equipped with great gear by Tascam, Neve, Shure etc. And if you think you struck gold during your recording session, So Called Studios also offer professional video creation services - including filming, editing and production!
Gospel Oak Studios
This studio is actually based away from Birmingham, based nearby in the heart of the beautiful Warwickshire countryside - well worth the trip, and ideal for acts who want to "get away from it all" to record their music.
Featuring a fantastic SSL AWS 924 Mixing Console and Prism Sound ADA-8XR Converters, it offers seclusion and privacy to recording artists. The studio is one of the most comprehensively equipped recording studios in the Midlands, offering pre-production, recording, mixing and mastering to artists, as well as video and photography services.
Grosvenor Road Studios
This is one of Birmingham's best loved and respected recording studios, which's been used by international recording artists as well as the local community.
They also provide spaces for cultural, creative and socially responsive organisations and businesses to thrive, and create professional networking events related to the cultural industries and learning opportunities. Cool!
The Oxygen Rooms
This is one of the top recording studios in Birmingham, often used by major labels and signed acts, as well as new and up-and-coming bands. Gear include Neve pre-amps, and a vintage British made Soundtracs CP6800 mixing console.
Despite the high-specs, they also offer very affordable rehearsal spaces, and 1st time bookings get a half-price discount!
Robannas is a versatile recording studio and rehearsal space that is suitable for the most diverse needs: from bands to singer-songwriters seeking to make great-quality recordings, to DJ rehearsal space, Robannas does it all, and more: they also do sound and stage hire, besides offering special recording packages for non-musicians, in case someone fancies a "musical" hen or birthday party!
Univibe AUdio is a professional recording studio located in the heart of central Birmingham, offering the best in modern and vintage audio equipment and instruments.
Centrally located just 5 minutes from the Bullring shopping centre, this well-equipped studio is comfortable and made with musicians in mind... it certainly has a fantastic selection of guitar amps, too!
Part of Univibe Audio, The Mushrooms offer four rehearsal rooms as well as two professional recording studios, at cost-effective prices. Other services include CD printing and duplication.
The Mushrooms are a quite popular rehearsal space with some of the cleanest and most comfortable live rooms anywhere in the region. They also have an impressive list of gear and are located opposite PMT Birmingham!
Muthers is a very special place, and more than just a recording studio/ rehearsal space: they provide a base for bands who are involved in the Birmingham music scene to "congregate, hang out, work and socialise... a hub where musicians and artists can drink, relax, play and make music."
Muthers have a hybrid Analogue Tape/Digital Pro Tools based recording studio, and a live music venue that hosts all kinds of events most Saturday evenings, and which you can also hire for your own private gigs and parties.
